Halloween food ideas are a popular topic this season. If you want a fun dessert idea for your Halloween party, try this amazing Halloween Rainbow Party Bundt Cake Recipe. Orange, Purple, Black and chocolate all mix together into a fun, spooky dessert everyone will remember. They’ll think you really fussed, but it’s so easy and simple to make.

I made a video to show you how simple this is and I couldn’t resist getting into one of my costumes for the fun of it. You’ll find the full recipe below my video. When you watch the video, be sure to click through to YouTube and subscribe to my channel and comment on the video!

Ingredients

  • 1 box Betty Crocker® SuperMoist® white cake mix
  • Water, vegetable oil and eggs called for on cake mix box
  • 1 box Betty Crocker® SuperMoist® Dark Chocolate cake mix
  • Water, vegetable oil and eggs called for on cake mix box
  • Black food coloring
  • Purple food coloring
  • Orange food coloring
  • 1 (12 oz) can Betty Crocker® Whipped Fluffy White Frosting

Directions:

Heat oven to 325°F. Generously grease a 12-cup tube cake pan. Make cake batters as directed on boxes. Divide the white cake into two separate bowls.

Add orange food coloring to one bowl and mix to the desired color.  Then, add purple to the other and mix to the desired color.

Halloween_Rainbow_Party_Cake_Halloween_Food_Recipe_Ideas

Pour 2/3 of the chocolate cake batter into a bowl and mix with a few drops of the black food coloring. Discard the remainder of the batter or use it for cupcakes. (You only need 2/3 of the chocolate cake batter, because if you use the whole thing in won’t fit in the tube pan).

Pour 1/2 of the chocolate cake mix into the bottom of the greased pan. Carefully pour the purple over the chocolate making sure you don’t stir it. Just pour it on top.

Then, carefully pour the orange batter over the purple batter and pour in the remainder of the chocolate.

Bake as directed on box or until toothpick inserted in center comes out clean. Cool 5 minutes.

Halloween_Rainbow_Party_Cake_Halloween_Food_Recipe_Ideas-5

Turn pan upside down onto cooling rack that is placed over a cookie sheet. Cool cake completely, about 30 minutes.

Halloween_Rainbow_Party_Cake_Halloween_Food_Recipe_Ideas-6

Once cake is cool, equally divide your frosting into 3 bowls. Use the food coloring again to make one bowl orange, one purple and one black.

Microwave each bowl of frosting for a few seconds on high until it is smooth enough to drizzle over the cake. With a spoon, drizzle the black frosting back and forth around the whole ring in a striping pattern until you use it all. Then do the same with the purple and then the orange.

Set cake aside to dry.

Store loosely covered and unrefrigerated.

Cake can be made a day or two in advance.

This is awesome!! i am going to have to try it for my dad and stepmoms wedding anniversary. they got married on halloween. Cant wait to try it!!

Reply

Sugar October 26, 2011 at 3:40 pm

Oh they are going to love it. Try to get the Wilton Icing Coloring because that will give you the vibrant color.

Enjoy :)

Reply

Jessie October 30, 2011 at 8:37 pm

The Black wilton food coloring definitely gave the frosting a weird taste. I would recommend using chocolate frosting so you can use less black coloring.

Reply

Jessie October 30, 2011 at 8:40 pm

Oh, and I did this with cupcakes instead of a bundt pan because I don’t have one, and they turned out really cool! If you didn’t know they were going to be multi colored, you’d be really surprised when you bit into one!

Reply

Sugar October 30, 2011 at 8:54 pm

Jessie, Glad it turned out well.

I didn’t try the wilton black I used the McCormick so thanks for the tip.

Ummm, it’s the same amount of cake, whether in a bundt pan or a 9×13. Sliced correctly, it will feed a lot more than it appears.

Reply

Sugar October 26, 2011 at 12:58 pm

ML

Yes it can feed a bunch but it’s so easy to make if anyone is concerned about not having enough cake just make two. They are so easy it’s not that much extra work.

What a great idea, you are absolutely right about getting the food coloring at craft store, I tried making orange myself last week and it was a lovely shade of pink that would not go anywhere!

Course the kids loved it anyway.

Thanks for a great idea!

Ali,

Hi, I’m so glad you like the cake. You can get food coloring at the super market but it’s not very bright so it is hard to get these colors but you can get close. If you can stop into a Michaels or other craft store and pick up Wilton icing coloring. The colors are very intense and look amazing.

Have fun and be sure to let me know how it turns out.

Thanks for such a wonderful idea!

Not sure if this was asked here, but could the same technique be used for cupcakes? It seems a bit more labor intense for cupcakes but I’m sure it would be worth it. How about a regular 13×9 pan? Would you have to swirl the batters if it’s not in a Bundt pan? This cake looks awesome!!!! Great job!!!

Sugar October 26, 2011 at 6:21 pm

Samantha,

Sure you can do cupcakes and a 9×13. You will have a different look but it should be great. Give it a try.

I made this last night with my 7 year old. We used a 9×13 pan because it was what we had. It came out great and he had so much fun helping. Thanks for the creativity! I sent the rest of the cake with a friend for her bake sale. I am hoping it is a hit. I hope you try the turkey idea. That would be awesome!

I LOVE THIS IDEA! I ACTUALLY MADE CUPCAKES WITH 3 DIFFERENT COLORS AND 2 DIFFERENT COLORED ICINGS! TOOK THEM TO MY JOB AND EVERYBODY LOVED THEM! THE COLLORS CAME OUT GREAT! I USED ORANGE PURPLE AND DARK GREEN FOR THE CAKE AND MADE ORANGE AND A GRAY ICING!

Okay. I must first confess. I’m a guy. And I cook. And I am a subscriber to your channel.

I made this cake this evening, and I gotta tell you, you are a genius. This recipe is super easy to follow, your directions crystal clear, and the results are phenomenal. This is going to be a huge hit at my friends’ Halloween Bash.

Thanks for all that you do.

Clay,

I seem to have a big following of men who love to cook, so I have decided to change my tag line soon to say “inspiring people to cook again” I never wanted to exclude men it was just that when I started my site is was to inspire and help the women I knew personally. My friends and neighbors mostly. I have learned now that there are way more men out there like you. Thank you for sharing this with me. I am happy to inspire anyone to get back in the kitchen and enjoying all that comes from it.

Be sure to tell your friends and family about my site. Oh and enjoy the wonderful ohhs and ahhs you are going to get when you serve that cake. It’s fun to cook things that people enjoy. :)

The only thing I changed was instead of spooning the icing on I put it into bags and cut the tips off and did it that way. Definitely faster and you get the same affect. Only problem I had was that the black Wilton icing dye I used tastes real funky. Way too sweet. Next time I won’t use the black icing.

Reply

Sugar October 30, 2011 at 12:41 pm

Sounds great Gen. Try the McCormick black I didn’t notice a flavor issue with that one.

I tried to make this cake and it all stuck to the bundt pan :( did you use olive oil to grease it?

Reply

Sugar November 6, 2011 at 2:09 pm

Oh Natalia,

I’m so sorry honey. Yes you always need to grease the pan when making a cake. If you read my directions I say to “Generously grease a 12-cup tube cake pan” Give it another try and grease the pan it will be fine.

Made it for Halloween and it was a hit…didn’t have the bright colors, but it still looked good. Tasted even better!!

Change the colors a bit, and you have a CAMO cake. My hunter hubby and daughter have each requested one for their birthdays! Changed the colors to tan, dark brown, and darker green and it looked great.
